About this trip

Ladakh punishes rushed itineraries. This one gives you a complete rest day in Leh before any high-altitude driving, which is the single thing that most determines whether you enjoy the trip or spend it with a headache.

From there it covers the classic route: Khardung La into Nubra, a night at Hunder among the dunes, then across to Pangong for a lakeside night, and back via Chang La. Inner Line Permits are arranged by us.

Day by day

  1. Day 1

    Arrive Leh · rest

    Airport pickup and hotel transfer. Complete rest for the day — this is not optional at 3,500 m. Short evening walk in the market if you feel well.

  2. Day 2

    Leh acclimatisation & monasteries

    Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace and the old town in the morning. Afternoon drive down the Indus to Thiksey and Hemis. Overnight in Leh.

  3. Day 3

    Leh to Nubra via Khardung La

    Cross Khardung La with a short stop at the summit, then drop into Nubra. Diskit Monastery and the Hunder dunes with a Bactrian camel ride. Overnight in Hunder.

  4. Day 4

    Nubra to Pangong

    Drive along the Shyok river to Pangong Tso. Afternoon and sunset at the lake. Overnight in a lakeside camp or homestay.

  5. Day 5

    Pangong to Leh via Chang La

    Sunrise at the lake, then return to Leh over Chang La, stopping at Thiksey if there is time. Overnight in Leh.

  6. Day 6

    Sham valley

    Magnetic Hill, the Indus–Zanskar confluence, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib and Alchi Monastery. Overnight in Leh.

  7. Day 7

    Departure

    Transfer to Leh airport for your flight.

Frequently asked

Will I get altitude sickness?
Some travellers feel mild effects on the first day. The full rest day on arrival is the main protection, and we carry oxygen in the vehicle. Tell us in advance about any heart or lung condition.
Are the permits included?
Yes. Inner Line Permits for Nubra, Pangong and the surrounding areas are arranged by us and included in the price.
Can this be done by road from Srinagar?
Yes, via Kargil, but it adds two days and the route is seasonal. Ask us and we will quote the road option separately.
