Sonamarg

The meadow of gold — glaciers, alpine rivers and the gateway to Ladakh.

Best time: May to October Altitude: 2,800 m 80 km (about 2.5 hours) from Srinagar
Sonamarg is the last major stop in Kashmir before the road climbs to Zojila and on to Ladakh. Thajiwas Glacier is the main draw and is reachable by pony or on foot from the road head.

The road here closes in winter, so Sonamarg is effectively a summer destination. Most travellers visit as a long day trip from Srinagar; staying overnight is better if you want the glacier before the crowds.
